The Ministry of Intercession - Day 29 - For the Spirit of Intercession
What to pray for
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. - John 15:16
During the last month or so we have been in Andrew Murray's school of prayer with emphasis on intercession. Not because it is fancy or we chose it out of many subjects, but because Jesus chose us. He chose that we should go and bear fruit, that we should abide in Him. And to show us He meant it He gave us His name to pray in that the Father would give what is being asked for.
The same as the old story about Abraham Lincoln's son who helped a soldier in need having been denied it previously getting audience with the president to get his case settled.
That is the power we have in prayer; Jesus is putting His name on the line as He is giving us access and power.
The power given is not just for our own sake or fun, but so that we may bear fruit.
Intercession is a stable of the christian prayer life. It is when we get to see the true power of prayer; when we selflessly lift up others need before our own.
Christians are often heard lamenting the lack of power in the church. Yet, intercession is ignored, although it is the thing Jesus has called us to do to bring God's kingdom around.
How to pray
Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. - John 15:5
All this power happens through Jesus, who has prepared the way with His sacrifice and given us access. If we abide in Him, meaning that we adhere to, stick to, follow, obey, defer to Jesus in our life we can ask in His name and get it. This means that we will be praying for things that honor the Father and not our own desires.
Therefore pray that God's people will abide in Christ. That the Spirit will lead us and not our old nature.
Keep asking for the Spirit of Intercession.
