See amid the Winter's Snow
We went to A Christmas Carol at the Ahmanson Theatre on Tuesday. The LA Time critic didn't like it too much, but they can't be right about everything. I loved it all. The carols were gorgeous and unedited. My favorite was when Alex Newell, the ghost of Christmas present sang at the top of their lungs, See Amid The Winter Snow. I don't remember hearing it or singing it. You can find more at this wikipedia article. I would pay to go back to the performance to hear this again. Much of the music was restrained, acoustic, and gorgeous. See Amid was deep calling out to deep. Preaching.
The tune "HUMILITY" was written by John Goss (1800-80) just for these lyrics by Edward Caswall (1814-78). I am surprised more words haven't been penned for this tune. It is singable, building, and soars during the refrain. The finale of the carol's refrain is "Sing through all Jerusalem: "Christ is born in Bethlehem." It is like telling the proud city, they have to go out to the humble country, to humble Bethlehem, to a humble stable outside Bethlehem, to a humble manger in that stable.
