10 Social Media Improvement Hacks

At least these would make it better for me:) Forgive me for my didactic tone—not my favorite tone. I am actually interested in social media’s redemptive possibilities, and think it has served some great purposes (especially during quarantine 2020).
1. Creative contribution: Make something creative. Say something creative. Take a picture. Write a poem. Record a song. Write a review. Try humor.
2. Encourage the creativity of those you actually know by liking/sharing something they create.
3. Learn about logical fallacies. There is helpful teaching on the google 🙂
4. If you share a helpful article or advice site, share it with a comment on why you thought it was worth sharing. Share a quote or insight that helped you.
5. Criticism. Do it with your heart and mind. Open-ended questions. Resist GS: “gotcha” and “snark”. If possible, start with a position of good will.
6. Absolutely NO “If you love your sister-in-law...post this all over Facebook” memes of any kind! Never. If you love your sister-in-law, a personal message (even short) will be better than any meme. Harness your good feelings, your expression of honor, your patriotism, your political pride in the form of action that actually makes a difference. For the record, I have terrific sister-in-laws!
7. Ask yourself, “could this be satire?” before you comment.
8. Ask yourself, “could this be from an disreputable source?” You don’t want to become one of those disreputable sources!
9. There are creators who take big risks, critics who take small risks, and destroyers who don’t take any risks. Who are you? Who do you want in your life?
10. Beware of bad characters on social media. Some are mining information and creating quite a profile of you and everyone you love. Many have an axe to grind or propaganda to promote. Some don’t mind lying to accomplish their goal.
I’m curious—what would make #SocialMedia better for you?
