Lunchbox Pneumatology Session 3

The Breath of the Son

YHWH's Ruach & Messianic Expectation
Ezekiel 36.26-27 and Joel 2.28-31

Messianic expectation: “It is only out of hope that we can be disappointed. To despair—de-sperare—presupposes that very spes, or hope from which despair departs. Where there is no hope, there are no disappointments either. Moltmann, 52.

Competition between Jesus and the Spirit:
Jesus & Spirit connections:
Birth: Matt 1.20 & Luke 1.35: “The Son is sent in the power of the Spirit, and the Spirit is sent through the risen Christ.” 321-22 Evidence.

The Spirit and Jesus is related to the Spirit and the Word.
The Spirit conceives both Jesus and the Word.
Jesus and the Word pour out the Spirit.

Baptism (every gospel): Mk 1.10
Public Ministry: Luke 4.1-19
Death: Every Gospel speak of Jesus “Yeilding up his Spirit” or “Breathing his last” And Belief is RIGHT there. Centurions believe.
Resurrection: Romans 8.11, 1 Corinthians 6.14

The message of the Gospel is Jesus!
This message is brought to you by the Spirit!
-power to speak
-power to understand
-power to believe

“In oversimplified terms, Jesus is at the center as the ‘what’ of the gospel, the Spirit as the ‘how.” Evidence. 321

Revelation & Experience
Revelation without Experience is theory.
Experience without Revelation is Mysticism.

“The Holy Spirit may be the last article of the Creed, but in the New Testament it is the first fact of experience.” Newbigin, The Household of God, 114.

The Spirit accomplishes the today mission of the Son. Romans 15.19-19

The Spirit who brings life and creates and atmosphere of life—conducive to life—works in and through Jesus.
Jayn sent me this from a recent article in CT:  "The same Spirit who leads us to turn within, mystically, toward the crucified Christ, will lead us to turn out, prophetically, toward those for whom Christ offered and offers himself. Following the Spirit, we will enter the darkness instead of denying it, trusting that the light of God is already breaking forth from its depths. This is what it means to be prophetic, speaking life into dry bones.”

Without the Son, the Spirit (a finger of God), has nothing to point at—no history to touch.
Without the Spirit, the historical redemptive rescue of God has not to point to it. It remains history and it is true—but it lacks “for you.” See more in McDonnell, 229

Word and Sacraments and Spirit:
Romans 6.1-5
1 Corinthians 6.11: Being united to the risen Lord is impossible without breathing with him.
1 Corinthians 10.1-4: Baptism and Communion
Galatians 3.1-5
2 Corinthians 1.21-22
Titus 3.4-7
