Conversation in St Paul with Pr Paul
I had a terrific conversation with Pr Paul Harrington last Tuesday. He passed on this article he wrote from April of 1994. In it he writes:
Some years ago I heard Dr. Gerhard Frost preaching in a chapel service. He made the statement that the heart of the church should never be broken but it frequently needs to be stretched. And so do we. We need to stretch our imaginations, our horizons, and our often dearly held notions of who and what we are...We can be sure that God is seldom content with the status quo. His world needs fixing and renewing and He calls us to be a major part of that process...And so we say, "Lead on, O King eternal, we follow not with fears, For gladness breaks like morning, wherever your face appears." (LBW #495)Where do you think God is stretching the church's heart? My prayer of late has been, "Lord, so captivate me and your church with your glorious vision, that all other captivating dreams and ideas whose source is not you, would fade because of their paleness."
